Take-home pay calculator

See how much income tax and National Insurance you'll pay and what you'll actually receive, whether you're employed, self-employed, or both. Every figure is worked through step by step below.

About you

Pick the tax year and where you live.

Where you live
How do you earn?

Employment

Your salary before any deductions.

£
£
Not sure? Most workplace schemes are "net pay" or "relief at source". Your payslip or pension provider will say which. Salary sacrifice is usually described as "salary exchange".
More employment options
£
The taxable value of things like a company car or private medical insurance (from your P11D). Taxed but not paid to you as cash.
£
Costs you must pay for your job that your employer does not reimburse, such as professional fees, uniform or business mileage. Reduce income tax only, not NI.
£
Charity donations taken from your pay before tax, per year. You get full tax relief at your top rate straight away; NI still applies.
Property incomeRent from a buy-to-let or lodger, mortgage interest relief
£
Total rent received in the year.
£
Letting fees, repairs, insurance, ground rent. Not mortgage interest.
£
Interest only, not capital repayments. Since 2020 this is not deducted from rent; you get a 20% tax credit on it instead.
£
If the credit was capped in earlier years (for example the property made a small profit), the unused interest carries forward. Your last tax return shows it.
Deduct from rent
The property allowance replaces expenses and the mortgage interest credit. "Automatic" uses whichever leaves you with less tax. Rent-a-Room relief for lodgers is not modelled.
Other incomeSavings interest, dividends and other taxable income
£
Interest outside ISAs.
£
From shares or your own company.
£
For example a taxable pension or trust income. Taxed like earnings but with no National Insurance.

Student loan

Select every plan you're repaying.

Started an English or Welsh undergraduate course in or after 2023? That's Plan 5. Between 2012 and 2022? Plan 2. Before 2012? Plan 1. Scottish students are on Plan 4. Check on GOV.UK.

Charity, allowances and Child BenefitGift Aid, Marriage Allowance, Blind Person's Allowance, Child Benefit
£
What you actually gave to charity in the year with Gift Aid ticked. The charity reclaims 25p per £1; higher-rate taxpayers get extra relief and it can restore your Personal Allowance or reduce the Child Benefit charge.
Used for the High Income Child Benefit Charge if your income is over £60,000.
